Six hours before renewal, whether you carry the RMP designation or not. The number does not change when you become the one who signs. What changes is how much the material is worth to you, because now the exposure is yours.

Same six hours, higher stakes
The board asks a master plumber for the same 6 hours of approved CPE it asks a journeyman for, and holding the RMP designation does not add hours. It adds everything else.
As a Responsible Master Plumber you keep at least $300,000 of general commercial liability insurance in force. You obtain the permits and request the inspections the code requires. You are responsible for making sure every person doing plumbing work under your license actually holds a current license or registration. And you can be the RMP of record for one company at a time, not two.
Read that list again and then look at the CE requirement. Six hours a year is the cheapest risk management a master plumber buys.

Where state and federal rules diverge
They do, on more than one point, and the stricter one governs what you may install. If your supply house is working off an older spec, you are the one holding it.
What you are certifying
Customer service inspections, backflow, and the paperwork that says you looked. Signing something you did not verify is how a good master ends up in front of the board.
What your crew is allowed to do
Tradesman scope, apprentice supervision, and who has to be physically on site. Getting this wrong is not a code violation, it is a licensing violation, and it lands on you.

Does an RMP need more CE hours than a master plumber?
No. Six hours either way. The RMP designation adds a separate renewal fee and the $300,000 insurance requirement, not extra continuing education.

Can I be the RMP for two companies?
No. An RMP may act as the RMP of record for only one company at a time.
