Who actually owes the six hours, and the one group that trips everybody up.
Most of the confusion about Texas plumbing CE is not about what is in the six hours. It is about who owes them in the first place.
The list
These hold a 6 hour CPE requirement before renewal:
- Master Plumber, with or without the RMP designation. The designation adds obligations, not hours.
- Journeyman Plumber.
- Tradesman Plumber Limited. A limited scope does not mean a limited requirement.
- Apprentice registration, but only if you hold an endorsement. This is the one.
- Medical Gas Piping Installation endorsement holders, who owe the six and then a separate two hours every three years on top.
The apprentice rule, plainly
A plain apprentice registration with no endorsement has no CPE requirement. Add an endorsement and the six hours apply to you like anybody else.
This catches people in both directions. Apprentices who picked up an endorsement and never realized the requirement came with it. And apprentices with no endorsement who paid for a class they did not owe, because somebody in the shop told them everybody has to.
If you are an apprentice, look at what endorsements are on your registration before you spend a dollar or a day.
Continuing education is not exam training
These get mixed up constantly, and they are completely different products with completely different hour counts.
CPE is the 6 hours you take every year to keep a license you already hold.
Exam training is the program you complete before you are allowed to sit for a license you do not hold yet:
- Journeyman Plumber license: a 48 hour training program
- Tradesman Plumber Limited license: a 24 hour training program
- Endorsement exams, including medical gas: a 24 hour training program
Nobody's six hour CE course counts toward those 48 or 24 hours, and nobody's exam training counts as your annual CPE. If a provider is vague about which one you are buying, that vagueness is the answer.
One more thing that costs people the class
Approval is per provider and per course. A provider being approved does not mean every course on their site is approved, and a course that is genuinely excellent is worth zero hours if the board has not approved it.
Before you spend a day, ask the provider directly what they are approved to deliver, and check the board's own approved provider list. That list is public. We link it below, and we link it even though it is a list of our competitors, because a plumber who loses a Saturday to an unapproved class is worse for this trade than a sale we did not get.
