48, 24 and 6. The three Texas plumbing training numbers, sorted out.
These get mixed up in every shop in Texas, and the mix up costs either money or a test date.
The numbers
- 48 hours. The approved training program required before you sit for the journeyman plumber exam.
- 24 hours. The approved training program required before you sit for the tradesman plumber limited exam, and the program required before an endorsement exam, medical gas included.
- 6 hours. The annual continuing professional education you take to keep a license you already hold.
They do not substitute for each other
Your six hour CPE does not count toward the 48. The 48 does not cover your CPE for the year. They are different products sold for different reasons, and a provider being approved for one does not mean they are approved for the other.
The practical version
If you hold a license, you owe six hours a year. Full stop.
If you are trying to get a license you do not have, you owe a training program first, and how long it is depends on which license. That program is a one time gate, not an annual one.
If you are doing both in the same year, which plenty of tradesmen moving to journeyman are, you owe both. Budget for both.
