The RMP designation does not add CE hours. It adds everything else.
Plumbers ask whether carrying the RMP means more continuing education. It does not. The six hours are the same six hours. What changes is what you are on the hook for the other 359 days.
Same hours, different exposure
A Master Plumber owes 6 hours of CPE before renewal. A Master Plumber holding the Responsible Master Plumber designation owes 6 hours of CPE before renewal. The designation is not a CE multiplier.
What it is instead
- At least $300,000 of general commercial liability insurance, kept in force the whole time you hold the designation.
- Permits and inspections. Obtaining the permits and requesting the inspections the codes require is the RMP's job.
- Everybody working under your license is licensed or registered. Not mostly. Everybody. That one is worth an afternoon with your roster.
- One company at a time. An RMP may be the RMP of record for exactly one company.
Why this makes the CE worth more, not less
Read that list again with your own name on it. Every item is a place where being current on the law is the difference between a normal year and a bad one. The six hours are the cheapest risk management a master plumber buys, and the only reason they feel like a chore is that most classes are taught like one.
