What a Tradesman Plumber Limited can actually touch, and what needs somebody standing there.
The license is not a smaller version of a journeyman card. It is a specific scope with a specific line, and the line is the building.
The scope
A Tradesman Plumber Limited may construct, install, repair, service or renovate plumbing for one and two family dwellings, under the supervision of a Responsible Master Plumber. He may also directly supervise apprentices on that same work.
The line
Anything larger than a one or two family dwelling, a tradesman may work on only under the direct supervision of a licensed journeyman or master plumber. Direct means that person is physically on site. Not reachable. Not stopping by. On site.
That is the whole distinction and it is worth knowing precisely, because getting it wrong is not a code violation you fix on a punch list. It is a licensing violation, and it lands on the RMP whose number is on the permit.
Why shops should care more than tradesmen do
A tradesman sent to a job he is not licensed for usually did not make that call. Somebody in dispatch did. If you run a shop, the scope question belongs on your side of the desk, not his.
How you got the license, and what keeps it
Getting it took at least 4,000 hours in the trade and an approved 24 hour training program before the exam. Keeping it takes 6 hours of approved CPE before each renewal. Same six as everybody.
