Drain cleaner and residential utilities installer: what those registrations actually buy a shop.
These are the three registrations an apprentice can hold. Each one turns an assistant into somebody who can produce, and each one starts a CE clock.
The three
- Drain Cleaner Restricted Registration
- Drain Cleaner Registration
- Residential Utilities Installer Registration
Why shops buy them
Because an apprentice who can only assist is a cost, and an apprentice who can produce is a hand. These registrations are the shortest path from one to the other, long before the tradesman or journeyman exam is on the table.
For a service shop, a drain cleaner registration on a capable second year apprentice pays for itself almost immediately. For anybody doing residential new construction, the utilities installer registration does the same.
What comes with them
A registered apprentice holding an endorsement owes 6 hours of approved CPE before renewal. The same six hours a master takes. An apprentice with no endorsement owes nothing.
That is the trade. The registration unlocks the work and it attaches an annual obligation, and the obligation is small compared to the value. It just has to be on somebody's list.
Do not guess at your own roster
An apprentice can see his endorsements in his TSBPE account. If you run the shop, ask. Most shops find at least one person carrying hours nobody had counted.
